About
A small press for headlines
Amber Headline is a set of free tools for the one line every piece of writing depends on.
Headlines get rewritten more than any other line, and the questions are always the same. Is “with” capitalized here? Will this fit in a search result? Which of these two versions is clearer? The tools on this site answer those questions quickly, without an account and without sending your drafts anywhere.
What is here
- The title case converter writes a headline in AP, APA, Chicago and MLA title case, sentence case and start case at once, and explains the rule behind each capital.
- The headline length checker counts characters and words and estimates how wide a title is in a search result.
- The A/B compare lines up two to four headlines in one table of facts.
- The word balance page describes the mix of common, uncommon, emotional and power words.
- The capitalization rules page compares the four style guides, with a word lookup.
How it works
Everything runs in your browser. The rules, word lists and measurements are part of the page you loaded, so nothing you type is uploaded, and the tools keep working if your connection drops. Pixel widths are measured with your own device's fonts, which is why they are labelled approximate.
The style guide rules are summarized in our own words from the guides themselves, which are listed on the rules page. Where a guide is silent, as AP is on subtitles, the tools say so and follow the usual practice. The word lists were written for this site.
What it isn't
No tool here scores a headline or predicts clicks. They describe and convert; the judgement stays with you and your readers. The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views without cookies; the privacy page has the details.
